form & the hand workshop

The Form & the Hand workshop has been an integral part of the form studio since 2008, designed to both encourage product design students to draw more with their whole bodies but to also make a more visceral connection between the anatomy and function of the hand with that of hand-held objects.

Carol Burch-Brown, Professor in the School of Visual Arts, has been a guest director for many of the workshops. The event comprises multiple short-term exercises, using vine charcoal and large newsprint, spanning gesture drawing, contour drawing, shape summaries, and structural studies through drawing on the hand.

How does the weight of the hand drive drawing?
How does the action of the shoulder influence the elbow, and the elbow the wrist?
What type of a machine is this?
